How I got here

Fate then, intervened in a way that has me baffled to this day. It was 1994 when I picked up “The Camden Citizen”, it was a small run tabloid, I think it was published by Camden council, but there in the back was a very small, small ad saying “Qigong, Taiji quan, Bagua Zhang, Xingyi Quan & Shaolin Quan, Swiss Cottage” and a phone number.
I didn’t know what any of the other stuff was but Shaolin; my God I knew what that was! I couldn’t believe my luck. Of all the places to find this, after all the martial arts shops in London, the Yellow pages, the martial arts magazines to find it in a paper I never really bothered to read articles in, let alone small ads, well I had to check this out!
So I phoned the number…. A Chinese voice said “ hallooo?”
“Hello I’m looking for Shaolin classes”
To which the heavily accented voice on the phone replied “ Scwhoooo...tchwing…. come Tuesday…. 6:30pm….”
Very confused I put the phone down, I had understood nothing the man told me except for “come Tuesday 6:30pm” and the address.
So Tuesday night came and I felt very nervous, getting beaten up, really well, by big geezers kept flashing through my head!
“Oh well whatever happens at least I’ve tried,” I thought.
