San Ling encompasses some of the finest points of Chinese culture, including Traditional Chinese Medicine, Qigong and Wushu. San Ling's founder Dr.Wen has studied all these arts for many years in mainland China. His ambition to bring his knowledge to the west was fulfilled in 1991 when he set up his first Wushu classes in London. San Ling Centre in Swiss Cottage quickly followed, there are now clinics in Baker Street (NW1) and Golders Green (NW11). Dr.Wen's plans for the future include setting up a combined Martial Arts and Traditional Chinese Medicine school teaching these skills at a location to be confirmed.

Traditional Chinese Medicine has been used in China for well over 2000 years and still provides about half the medical treatment in China today. It includes the use of herbal treatment, acupuncture, acupressure and tuina massage, and the practise of Qigong exercises. All these methods work on the principle of balancing the Yin and Yang, regulating the flow of Qi energy in the channels and harmonising the function of the different organs. They look at the person as a whole, treating not only the symptoms but also the root of the problem, and promoting the person's own natural healing power.

Wushu roughly means "martial technique". Translated more literally it means "stop fighting using fighting techniques". The arts are separated into two categories. These are "internal" meaning they emphasize the use of Qi energy (Qi is the universal energy found in all living things) and "external" meaning they emphasize the physical aspect (this doesn't mean there is no internal side, forms such as "Tongbei" and "Mian" Quan ("Through the back" and "Cotton" Fists) both rely heavily on the use of internal energy.
